On December 22nd 1917 the original nine board members applied for a charter for The Farmers Union Cooperative Business Association.  The charter was approved on January 16th 1918.  The original board members were John Coleman and John Ramey of Denison.  JA Porter, Claude Glover, Henry Faris, Ed Myers and OA Reddick of Mayetta and Robert Hurd and Charles Davidson of Holton.  The corporation was organized for profit, and the purposes for which it was formed were:  (A) The conversion and disposal of all agriculture products by means of mills, elevators, markets, stores, or otherwise (B) Buying and shipping of grain for profit (C) Cleaning and handling of grain (D) Manufacturing and marketing of dairy products (E) Buying and selling of coal, flour, farm supplies, merchandise and livestock, direct.  Originally the cooperative had 51 members.   The first manager was Mr. Frank Decker.

Through the years many things have changed. The Corporate offices were moved from Denison to Holton.  In 1969 the name of the cooperative was changed to The Jackson Farmers, Inc.   At times, in the history of your cooperative there were locations in Muscotah, Netawaka, Whiting, Oskaloosa, and Denison.  The current locations are Holton, Effingham, Meriden, and Lancaster.   The Effingham, Meriden and Lancaster locations were added through acquisitions.  Jackson Farmers Inc. is a full service cooperative with elevator locations at Holton, Meriden and Lancaster with a combined licensed storage capacity of 2.333 million bushels.   Feed mills are located at Lancaster and Holton.  Dry fertilizer buildings are located east of Holton, in Effingham and Lancaster.  With a liquid plant in Holton.  Chemicals are sold at all of our locations with bulk chemicals handled in Lancaster and Holton.  The cooperative's fuel and propane bulk plants are located east of Effingham with a fuel pumps in Effingham.
